I recently attended a Girl Scouts event, called “Illuminate”. It was a speed-networking event where girls connected with mentors in STEM fields and had the opportunity to learn about general skills and more.
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. There has been a 17% growth in demand for STEM jobs. In 2020, there will be an estimated 1.4 million computer specialist job openings.
However, only 0.4% of high school girls select computer science as a college major. Women earned only 17% of computer and information sciences bachelor’s degrees in 2014.
Encouraging girls to go into STEM fields helps them discover how they can make a difference in the world.
Since new developments are the products of a creative mind, we must therefore stimulate and encourage that type of mind in every way possible. – George Washington Carver
