Creating Magic in the Middle of Chaos

Creating Magic in the Middle of Chaos

I’ve always loved creating stories—but even more than that, I love seeing them come alive.

Lately, I’ve been working on a fantasy film series, teaching myself new video editing tools as I go. It’s equal parts exciting and frustrating—figuring out how to take something that only exists in my head and turn it into something real with the tools that are available (i.e. learning what the technology can do and what it can’t yet).

I’ve also been working on some graphic design projects, such as logos and t-shirts. What started as a separate creative outlet slowly became part of the larger vision. I didn’t want to make anything too obvious or promotional—instead, I liked the idea of subtlety. Small details that mean something if you know where to look. A symbol worn by a character as a pendant might show up later as a shirt design or a sticker. Little pieces of the story, carried into the real world.

Somewhere along the way, I realized—if I’m building a film studio, it should have a home. So I started creating a website to bring everything together. It’s still a work in progress, but seeing all these ideas slowly connect has been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.

At the same time, life has been anything but simple.

I’ve been helping take care of my mother through a serious illness. What we first thought might be dementia or Alzheimer’s progressed far too quickly. After an MRI, doctors found a large tumor on the left side of her brain. Before surgery, things got worse quickly. And afterward, recovery was long—especially as her short-term memory slowly worked its way back toward normal.

Then we learned the tumor was cancerous. The next step is radiation therapy. In many ways, it feels like we’ve won a major battle, but the war is not over.

When I was younger, I read a lot of fantasy. Back then, it felt like escape. Now, I see it differently. The battles in those stories—the impossible odds, the long journeys, the quiet moments of courage—they aren’t really that different from what people go through every day. We might not face dragons or ride through enchanted forests, but we do face fear, uncertainty, and moments that ask more of us than we think we can give.

And just like in those stories, it’s often the smallest things that matter most. A kind word. A moment of patience. Choosing to keep going.

Those are the things that feel like magic now.

And in a way, they always were.
